(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) – Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts announces its 2010 Desert Sky outdoor concert series, which will feature an all-star line-up of musical talent on Friday and Saturday evenings from March 21 through May 8 in the Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater. Performers include singer-songwriters Elvis Costello and Rosanne Cash, Brazilian guitarist and vocalist Gilberto Gil, classic jazz-and-blues diva Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, the Celtic band Solas and bluegrass ensemble Bearfoot. The Desert Sky series is sponsored by Scottsdale League for the Arts.
Tickets for all Desert Sky concerts will go on sale on Jan. 28 through the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ patron services box office at (480) 994-ARTS (2787) or online at www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org. Subscribers who purchase the entire series will receive their tickets to Lavay Smith’s concert for free.
The 2010 Desert Sky season will open on
Sunday, March 21, with
Gilberto Gil (tickets: $30). One of Brazil’s most celebrated musicians and activists, Gil has performed worldwide and earned multiple Grammys. His infectious songs embrace many cultures and musical traditions, from Brazilian samba and bossa nova to rock, reggae and funk.
Rosanne Cash (tickets: $38) will perform on Friday, March 26. This Grammy winner and star of the country-western scene also has established herself as a singer-songwriter in the indie-rock world. On her latest album, The List, she reinterprets the classic songs that shaped her as an artist, culled from a list of essential country tunes that her father, Johnny Cash, shared with her at age 18.
Elvis Costello Solo (tickets: $58) will be featured on Friday, April 9. Costello has followed his curiosity in a musical career spanning more than three decades. His versatility encompasses virtually every musical genre, from British punk and new wave to classical, jazz and American roots. Perhaps best known for his performances with The Attractions, The Imposters and pianist Steve Nieve, Costello has entered into acclaimed collaborations with many other artists, from Burt Bacharach to the Brodsky Quartet. Costello’s recent projects include his 2009 album, Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, and his celebrated talk show, Spectacle, on the Sundance Channel.
On Saturday, May 1, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers (tickets: $25) will take the stage. With pin-up glamour and sultry vocals reminiscent of the great Billie Holiday, Smith leads a world-class big band while bringing a modern, provocative twist to the classic jazz and blues of the 1940s and ’50s.
The 2010 Desert Sky series will conclude with a double concert with Solas & Bearfoot (tickets: $25) on Saturday, May 8. The internationally acclaimed Celtic band Solas has won over fans around the globe with its unique fusion of traditional Irish, folk and country melodies, jazzy improvisations and global rhythms. The hip young bluegrass phenomenon Bearfoot will open the concert.
