Marc Cohn would have performed at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, April 14, 2020.
After winning a Grammy® for his soulful ballad “Walking in Memphis,” Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling singer-songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. Rooted in the rich ground of American rhythm and blues, soul and gospel and possessed of a deft storyteller’s pen, he weaves vivid, detailed, often drawn-from-life tales that evoke some of our most universal human feelings: love, hope, faith, joy, and heartbreak.
Our audience was certainly as excited as our staff at the Center for Marc Cohn’s performance. In lieu of the performance and while we patiently await a rescheduled date, we thought it would be fun to explore some of Cohn’s performances and what he has been up to lately.
In August 2019, Cohn released his new collaborative album, Work To Do, with The Blind Boys of Alabama. Cohn collaborated with his daughter on the music video for the title track (above). While the track explores the concepts of what people are looking forward to in their life, it also includes a call to action to help end gun violence. In 2005, Cohn survived being shot in the head following a carjacking. Not surprisingly, Cohn identifies this as a moment that altered his perspective on life forever.
Following the postponement of his tour due to world events, Cohn has been more active on social media. Along with positive messages of healing and perseverance he has shared images of his family being all together, which is a rare event for a touring musician. Cohn has focused his efforts on fundraising through Sweet Relief Musicians Fund for COVID-19 relief. Due to massive cancellations of live events, this fund aims to be able to supply coverage for musicians necessities like living expenses, medical bills, and automobile expenses.
In May 2019, Cohn had a viral moment when Facebook brought him and Miley Cyrus together to sing his hit “Walking in Memphis” at the Beale Street Music Festival. See how they collaborated above and watch the full performance below.
