Inspirational Book Delivers Valuable Message of Self- Esteem
As we celebrate Black History Month, it is fitting to introduce our patrons to a wonderful and affirming book that is a store favorite among our retail staff. I Am Enough by author, actor and activist Grace Byers, and illustrated by Keturah A. Bobo is a New York Times bestseller and Goodreads Choice Awards picture book winner. The text begins, “Like the sun, I’m here to shine,” and sets the tone with creative simile to uplift and delight readers young and old. The book is presented as a lyrical poem with themes of acceptance, respecting others and self-confidence. Featuring a diverse group of female characters and a wide range of skin tones and abilities, the narrative is simple and eloquent with a profound message.
Grace Byers is widely recognized from her starring role on Empire in 2015, earning her an NAACP Image Award nomination. She is involved in a variety of TV and film projects including Marvel’s The Gifted and BET’s Tales. Byers has written multiple children’s books, including her follow up book I Believe I Can. In addition to her other pursuits, Byers volunteers with the nonprofit anti-bullying organization Saving Our Daughters, which works with girls from multicultural backgrounds to overcome bullying and domestic violence, and with CODA (Children of Deaf Adults).
Keturah Ariel Nailah Bobo is a full-time artist who debuted her illustrating talents in I Am Enough. She seeks to illuminate those who are too often underrepresented in books, the media and art. Bobo hopes her artwork can start important conversations and inspire the next generation. Her distinctive technique uses acrylic paint on board and brings texture and color to life while conveying a message of positivity and inclusivity.
