About the Event

Detour Company Theatre presents two exciting productions in June. Two shows mean double the fun! Join us on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Come back on Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. for Once Upon a Mattress. These two musical comedies are sure to leave you laughing and smiling all the way home.

Opening on Broadway in 1959, Once Upon a Mattress ran for 460 performances and was nominated for Best Musical at the 1960 Tony® Awards. Written by Jay Thompson, music by Mary Rogers, and lyrics by Marshall Barer, this musical comedy adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale Princess and the Pea is sure to win the hearts of a prince, and an audience.

Many moons ago in a far-off place, Queen Aggravain decreed no couples could marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is, until the “shy” swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, showed up. Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides side-splitting shenanigans.

Accessibility Detour aims to create shows which are accessible for all. All performances have ASL interpretation, audio description, and captioning. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact [email protected].

Detour Company Theatre showcases the theatrical talent, courage, and artistry of adults with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. These vibrant and family-friendly musical productions are sure to leave you smiling, dancing, and inspired.
