About the Event

Join us on Thursday, Dec. 7, in Scottsdale for an extraordinary cinematic experience and an incredible night of Indigenous fashion! NEW: Art is Culture, Culture is Art, a film by Nathaniel Fuentes, chronicles the life and legacy of Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee) as an innovator, entrepreneur, and educator.

“Endowed with creativity and charisma and profoundly connected to his cultural heritage, Lloyd Kiva New gave this world a fresh perspective on Indigenous art, the power of education, and the range of potential each of us possesses,” said Joan Fudala, Scottsdale community historian. “His special gift to Scottsdale was its reputation as an eclectic center for arts, crafts, and fashion. Although he moved on to establish national Indian arts organizations and mentor hundreds of promising Native American artists, he left an indelible mark on Scottsdale through his 20 stellar years here. The worlds of contemporary art, fashion, and education lost a remarkable creative spirit and friend when he died in 2002.”

The experience begins at 6 p.m. with the debut screening and a talk-back at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The evening turns glamourous with a ticketed VIP fashion showcase at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West at 7:30 p.m., featuring two prominent Indigenous designers. The event will also feature a silent auction with one-of-a-kind designs from Indigenous designers.

The fundraiser benefits the completion of the film for national and international distribution. Your presence and support at this event will not only make the film a reality but also contribute to the arts and cultural history of Scottsdale.
