about this event
Detour Company Theatre presents its new Detour After Dark program, featuring works with more mature content and themes than the theater troupe’s typical family–friendly fare. The first production in this program is the school edition of Rent, a musical about falling love, finding your voice, and living for today. Winner of the Tony® for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent features songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini’s La bohème, Rent School Edition follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
Rent School Edition retains the dramatic intent of the original musical, though it includes minimal changes to language and the removal of one song.
Detour Company Theatre offers theatre training and performance experiences for adults with cognitive and physical disabilities, providing them authentic opportunities to develop artistry, demonstrate courage and collaboration, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of musical theatre with the entire community. As the Center’s resident theater troupe, Detour returns to present its annual spring show, under the direction of its founder and artistic director, Sam.
