Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor
Schumann: Symphony no. 3 in E-flat major, “Rhenish”, op. 97
This program opens with this delicate, but majestic Overture by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, the sister to the more famous Felix Mendelssohn. Equally as talented as her brother, she was discouraged from music as a career, and this survives as her only orchestral work. Phoenix Symphony violinist Adrienne Finet stars in Felix Mendelssohn’s flashy Violin Concerto, one of the premiere works in all violin repertoire. Schumann’s final symphony was composed about a trip to the Rhine, encompassing the sounds of the river flowing, birds flying, and the peaceful quality of nature.
