The 2022–23 jazz series presents innovative and masterful jazz artists, from contemporary luminaries like Joshua Redman 3×3, Christian McBride’s New Jawn, and the Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez Duo to legendary groups like Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts brings the best jazz artists from across the country and around the world to our audiences each year in the beautiful and intimate Virginia G. Piper Theater.

Christian McBride’s New Jawn

Friday, February 3, 2023, 8 p.m.

Christian McBride is an eight-time Grammy®-winning bassist, composer, and bandleader. McBride is the artistic director of the historic Newport Jazz Festival, New Jersey Performing Arts center and the TD James Moody Jazz Festival, and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. He is also a respected educator and advocate as the artistic director of Jazz House KiDS and the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions.

Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez Duo

Friday, March 3, 2023, 8 p.m.

The Limón Dance Company (LDC) has been at the vanguard of dance since its inception in 1946, influencing the evolution of dance with their arresting visual clarity, theatricality, and rhythmic and musical life. LDC is the first dance group to tour internationally under the auspices of the State Department, as well as the first modern dance company to perform at Lincoln Center in New York and perform twice at The White House. “Pedrito [Martínez] is a genius.” — Wynton Marsalis

Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Tuesday, March 7, 2023, 8 p.m.

Preservation Hall is a humble, much-loved room dedicated to keeping the past and future of jazz alive. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is embarking on a pilgrimage of its own: a nationwide tour to celebrate the Hall’s 60th anniversary and initiate audiences into the ineffable experience of channeling their ancestors through the music and culture they’ve inherited from them.

Glenn Miller Orchestra

Sunday, March 12, 2023, 2 p.m.

A legend lives on as the Glenn Miller Orchestra presents seven decades of hits. The 18-member ensemble just celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2021 and continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements alongside more modern selections performed in the distinctive Miller style and sound, where the clarinet holds the melodic line—doubled or coupled with the tenor sax playing the same notes—with harmonies produced by three other saxophones as growling trombones and wailing trumpets add their “oo-ahs.”

Joshua Redman 3×3

Thursday, May 4, 2023, 7:30 p.m.

Joshua Redman’s latest project is a celebration of the power of three—the music of three iconic jazz composers interpreted in the classic trio format of saxophone, bass, and drums. The music is drawn from the works of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Wayne Shorter, each of whom Redman considers “not just relevant but foundational” for today’s musicians, and the setting returns to a format in which he has excelled throughout his career.
